It's kind of annoying that I'm still young enough that they want to splurge on lots of little things rather than one slightly less little thing. So I'm being honest with them that I am really only interested in cars, and so I've put together a list of the cheapest ones that might not be terrible.

(These last ones are not serious, except maybe the Mercury. And maybe the Fiat... Okay, only the Citicar is a joke. HOWEVER, I wonder if I could fit a Hayabusa engine in it!)

Vega wagon or Celica GT!! They look fantastic. The Vega could be terrible, never owned an American car.. Old Toyotas can be fixed with a piece of string and other bits and bobs found around the house.

Yeah, those are my top two! I especially love the Celica. Aside from the one corner, it looks spotless. Definitely was well cared for, or at least that's how the pictures make it seem.

The only one I can't believe I even considered is the Tercel. Even the Saturd is nicer than that thing.

I think the most important thing when buying an old car like this.. is NO AUTOMAGICS.. Manual trannys ain't that hard to fix.. but automagics? Well... them be magic man...

Please buy none of these cars. Please. Buy a BMW beater project car...but not any of these.

Yeah, but then again, my Mustang was an auto and didn't have a single transmission issue the whole time I owned it. So I guess it's not always a bad sign, though I agree that stick is better just in general.

Not even the Celica or Vega? Not even them? D:

It all depends on tons of things I guess, but being from Norway I shun slushboxes like... uhm.. like something VERY bad (Miley Cyrus perhaps?) :P Mostly because I've driven a few delivery trucks with automatic trannys, and let me tell you, when it get's colder than -25 celsius outside.. Oh man :P

Anywho, get a car YOU like or one you'd like to wrench on I'd say. Don't care about an old grumpy arse like me.

On a serious note, that Saturn could be fun for autocross

Besides those cars, what are your plans for the future? Did you have that big sit down and talk with your parents? With any car, what will you be needing it for?

Are you looking for a project car? because all of those look like they need work.
But Im guessing this is a 'first car' since you are asking your parents to buy it, but may I suggest spending an extra ~4k (10k if you can. Jalopnik has great articles on the best buys under 10k) for something that needs little to no work rather than putting a questionable amount of money into a car thats barely alive and has no resale value.

Vega looks rusted out and Celica has a salvage title/ front damage

Sounds like you've never bought a project car before.

Miata and E30 are generally safe to buy dirt cheap if thats what your looking for. (manual of course)
also don't limit yourself to craigslist. check out autotempest.com (my personal favorite site.)

Quiet an ignorant statement to make. What are you going to do with a rusted out i4 vega or a wrecked celica?

I don't even know, really.

And I'd just like to have one again. Much more convenient than a bike, and I'd be able to visit home easier and more often.

Shit, I completely missed the Celica's title issues.
As for the Vega, I'm hoping it's mostly just dirty. The pictures are poop so I'd have to see it in person regardless.

haha neither are my cup of tea. I did see a bunch of project BMWs in your area on CL that seemed to be in your price range. I feel like a lot of the cars in these ads were pretty far gone.

If you must buy one of those, Celica GT all the way. There is no question about it. Otherwise...you need a bigger budget.
